When Everyone Has AI, What Makes YOU Different?
The future of work isn't just about smarter technology. It's about supersizing the human superpowers that make us uniquely valuable.
One of my favorite questions to ask audiences during my Lead With Your Brand!™ keynotes is: "Are you coffee, or are you Starbucks?"
Think about it. Coffee is a commodity. Starbucks built a premium brand around something much bigger than coffee: the experience, the connection, and the way it makes customers feel.
Interestingly, Starbucks itself has been rediscovering that lesson. After years of leveraging technology to drive efficiency and scale, its Back to Starbucks strategy has renewed the focus on human connection. Mobile ordering isn't going away, but neither is the barista who writes a personal message on your cup.
Technology plus human connection. That's where one plus one can equal three.
And there's a powerful lesson here for every business leader and professional navigating the AI revolution.
The WHAT Will Change. Your HOW Makes the Difference.
AI is transforming the tasks we perform, the skills we need, and the ways we work. But change isn't new. Technology has always reshaped business and careers.
What matters is how we adapt.
Deloitte's 2026 Global Human Capital Trends research found that 70% of business leaders identify speed and adaptability as their primary competitive strategy for the next three years.
Yet as organizations invest billions in AI, I believe we need to ask an equally important question:
Are you investing in your people as intentionally as you're investing in AI?
Because tomorrow's high performers won't simply be those who know how to use technology. They'll be the people who bring creativity, judgment, empathy, relationships, and distinctive perspectives to whatever technology makes possible.
Your job title may be a commodity. The unique way YOU do the job is your brand.
AI Can Amplify Your Brand. But Don't Outsource It!
I'm amazed by how many social media posts encourage professionals to ask ChatGPT or Claude, "What's my personal brand?"
Here's the problem: AI doesn't necessarily know you. And let's face it, most of us don't have a significant digital footprint for AI to research and organize.
Your brand lives in your experiences, your choices, your relationships, and the way people experience you at your best.
Through our Five Steps to Lead With Your Brand!™ system, we're helping professionals leverage AI as a coach and thought partner—not as the creator of their identity. Human feedback and real experiences provide the foundation. AI helps uncover patterns, challenge assumptions, and articulate what makes someone uniquely valuable.
You provide the stories. AI helps uncover the patterns. YOU decide what is authentically you.
So, ask yourself:
What are my superpowers that transcend any single task or job?
How do I uniquely bring those strengths to life, regardless of the technology I'm using?
Am I making my value visible, or simply hoping my hard work gets noticed?
In an increasingly automated world, being good at what you do isn't enough. You need to show your value, turn up the volume and lead with your brand toward your next career breakthrough!
The future belongs to people—and organizations—that know how to combine powerful technology with uniquely human talent.
At Lead With Your Brand!™, we help organizations unlock that potential through engaging keynotes, interactive workshops, and leadership and career development series—whether organization-wide, within existing talent programs, or through employee resource groups.
If you're thinking about how to prepare your people for the future of work, let's start a conversation.
Back at Out & Equal - and Building LGBTQ+ Leadership Pipelines
I’m thrilled to be heading back to the Out & Equal Workplace Summit this October in Seattle. It is one of the largest gatherings of LGBTQ+ and allied professionals, workplace leaders, ERG champions, and advocates from around the world.
Out & Equal has been part of my own leadership journey for more than 20 years. I first attended the Summit in 2005, during my years leading LGBTQ+ employee groups at GE, NBCUniversal and Comcast, and I’ve seen firsthand the role these communities can play in helping people build confidence, expand their networks, gain visibility, and grow as leaders.
That’s one of the reasons this year’s session feels especially meaningful.
I’ll be taking the stage with Trent Arrowood from Altria for our session:
From ERGs to Leadership Pipelines: Building LGBTQ+ Talent Labs
Wednesday, October 14 | 1:45–3:00 PM PT | Rooms 343–344
Together, Trent and I will share the real-world story case study of Altria's OutFront LGBTQ+ & Ally Leadership Lab – an initiative I had the privilege of helping design and facilitate. It’s a look behind Altria’s LGBTQ+ leadership development program and how an ERG, HR, talent leaders, and executive stakeholders came together to turn an idea into a meaningful investment in the next generation of leaders.
At a time when many organizations are rethinking how they support employee communities, I believe there is an enormous opportunity to broaden the conversation. ERGs can absolutely create connection and belonging, but they can also become powerful engines for leadership development, career acceleration, executive exposure, and measurable business impact.
And this won’t just be a case study.
We’re making the session highly interactive. Participants will use our LGBTQ+ Leadership Lab Design Canvas to identify organizational needs, think through the leadership capabilities they want to develop, and begin building a program they can take back to their own organizations.
I’m incredibly excited to share this work at a Summit that has meant so much to me personally and professionally.
If you’re heading to Out & Equal this year, I hope you’ll add our session to your agenda. Trent and I would love to see you in Seattle!
